Last week he invited me over to his house so I could experience one of his fly tying classes. He lead me down to his basement where he said everything was set up. I expected a couple vises and a card table, not the full on fly shop set up he had, I was impressed!
I told him that I had never tied a traditional salmon fly before. I have always thought they are extremely beautiful. That night I learned that I had asked the right guy for a salmon fly lesson. He can tie a dozen classic salmon patterns in the time I can tie a half dozen wooly buggers!
I arbitrarily picked out a grey ghost from a book of salmon flies. Thats where we started. He walked me all the way through hook choice, body wrapping techniques, wing prep, and finally through the application of a special black shellac head coating. I not only learned how to tie the grey ghost but I received an amazing history lesson at the same time!
All the material is provided and you keep what you tie. He is happy to do solo classes but doesn't teach more than two people at a time. This keeps the atmosphere informal but highly educational.
